Tree Trimming and Pruning
Tree trimming and pruning on the Burford sand plain has one preoccupation that other places do not share: how much leaf a stressed root system can actually supply.

(226) 546-3837These are two different operations that get confused constantly. Thinning makes a crown less dense without making it smaller. Reduction makes it smaller.
On this ground crown thinning and canopy reduction carry a third consideration that does not apply everywhere: how much canopy the roots can actually supply. Ring (226) 546-3837.
On free-draining sand, a full canopy is a demand the root system may not be able to meet through a dry August.
Selective thinning cuts that demand. Remove a share of the finer growth spread right through the canopy and the outline and the height are unchanged, but the roots have less to support.
This is not a licence to take a lot. A quarter of the live crown is the working ceiling in one visit and a stressed tree wants less than that, because the response to over-thinning is a flush of replacement growth — which costs more water, not less. Restraint is the whole skill.
Then there is the obvious one. A packed canopy catches wind like canvas, and there is almost nothing standing upwind here to take the edge off it.
Allow the air through rather than against and you ease the demand on roots that sand holds far less securely than clay would. That is worth having on any exposed tree and it is worth having urgently on a tree that has lost the shelter it grew up in.
Neither version makes a tree safe. Both lower the load and with it the risk. Neither touches the two problems that actually drop trees: rot at the base, and a plate already on the move.
Canopy reduction shortens limbs. Every cut finishes on a lateral substantial enough to take over as the tip, near enough a third of the removed diameter, leaving the outline natural and each shortened limb still growing.
Topping cuts wherever was convenient. Cut faces erupt in growth fixed only to surface tissue. Give it a few seasons and the crown weighs more than it did originally, all of it perched on decaying stubs.
Specify crown thinning and canopy reduction in metres, not percentages. A measurement can be checked from the lawn afterwards.
A planted row is a single structure as far as wind is concerned. Thin or reduce one tree in it heavily and you have opened a gap that the neighbouring trees now have to stand up in.
So on windbreak rows and lane plantings we assess the run rather than the individual, and where work is needed it is generally spread across several trees rather than concentrated on one.
That is a slower conversation and a better outcome, and it is not something a per-tree quote from a photograph will ever capture.

Dead branch removal on sand produces more material than people expect. A drought-stressed tree sheds interior and upper branches quietly over years, and it holds onto them long after they die.

Emergency storm damage cleanup is taken outside working hours across Burford and the old township. In July 2026 downed trees closed roads across Brant, including the Fifth Concession at Wight Road on this village's doorstep.

Tree removal is where we end up when trimming has run out of road. Ring us about a removal and the answer is usually that a good trim will do; occasionally it is not.

There is exactly one situation tree cabling and bracing suits. The tree earns its keep, the weakness sits up in the crown instead of down at the butt, and something below it would be damaged if the tree let go.

Grinding gets its own figure instead of disappearing into the felling price, since a good many owners are happy enough with the tree gone and the stump staying.

Detail earns its keep here. Which tree, how the lane runs, what stands underneath, whether a machine will pass through the gate. The rest is optional; a contact is not. Happier on the telephone? (226) 546-3837 reaches the yard.
